Seven Women?s Basketball Players Garner OVC Academic Honors

The commitment to making sure that the student in student-athlete comes first was bolstered today as the Ohio Valley Conference announced is annual academic awards. The Murray State women's basketball team saw seven of its members of the 2008-09 squad honored on eight the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll or with an OVC Medal of Honor.
The Medal of Honor is given annually to student-athletes who achieve the highest grade point average, a 4.0 GPA.
The 2008-09 recipients of the honor for Murray State included: Amber Guffey, Paige Guffey, Rachael Isom and Angela Mullins.
Both Amber Guffey and Paige Guffey earned their third-straight OVC Medal of Honor and have now earned six of the 10 given to women's basketball players. This season marks the most Medal of Honor recipients in a single season by the women's basketball team, with the previous high being two. Rebecca Remington is the only other women's basketball player to have earned a Medal of Honor (2001-02 and 2002-03).
The OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll award goes to student-athletes that have a 3.25 GPA or better and were eligible to compete for their teams during the season. This season seven members of the team were named to the honor roll, including Amber Guffey, Paige Guffey, Rachael Isom, Kristen Kluempers, Mallory Luckett, Angela Mullins, and Kayla Vance.
“Seven players from our team earning academic awards reflects the level of commitment that not only our program, but the entire athletic department has to success in the classroom,” said head coach Rob Cross. “It also shows the great job that Athletics Director Allen Ward and Associate Athletics Director Matt Kelly have done to ensure that our student-athletes have the necessary tools at their disposal to be successful.”
Since the start of the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll in 1989-90 the women's basketball team has placed at least one player on the honor roll, with the largest number being eight during the 2001-02 campaign.
