The Murray State Women's Soccer team improved to 3-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the OVC as they opened conference play this evening and defeated Jacksonville State, 3-1, in Jacksonville, Ala.
Two goals in the first seven minutes of play helped the Racers cruise to a 3-1 victory over the Gamecocks. Kalli McCoy got the offense going with her third goal of the season just three minutes into play. Maja Nordahl was credited for the first of her three points on the day as she earned the assist.
Just four minutes later, Nordahl scored her first collegiate goal as she put back the rebound after a shot off the cross bar. McCoy was credited with the assist, which was her second of the season.
MSU controlled the first half as they outshot the Gamecocks, 11-3.
Amber DeLanei made things interesting as she scored her OVC best sixth goal of the season in the 57th minute. The MSU defense was too much for the Gamecocks though, as they allowed just three shots the rest of the way. Danielle McMurray would tack on an insurance goal in the 83rd minute to help end any thought of a Gamecock comeback.
Katie Walsh tallied two saves on the day and improved her record to 3-1-1 for the season.
MSU outshot the Gamecocks, 17-8 on the night.
The Racers will return to the field Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. as they take on the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn.
