What started out as a beautiful day for soccer quickly turned into multiple delays due to lightning and heavy rain. The Racers defeated the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M 9-1 today at Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky.
The Racers had multiple scoring chances within the first five minutes of the game as they had two corner kicks and two shots on goal, one of which was headed off the cross bar by Veronika Pribyslavska. The Racers also had a goal called off due to offsides early on as well.
After seven minutes of play the storms came rolling in and led to the first delay of the game.
The Racers came back out after the delay and quickly went to work offensively. Laken Dirkes put the Racers on the board with her first goal of the season in the 14th minute mark after Sophie Hargreaves played a through ball right on the foot of Dirkes. Hargreaves would get a goal of her own just seven minutes later on a penalty shot to put the Racers ahead, 2-0. Dirkes added her second goal of the game in the 21st minute and Kalli McCoy would quickly follow with her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute to give the Racers a 4-0 advantage.
Katie Wilson would net her first goal of the season as well right before the second delay of the game in the 34th minute.
Danielle McMurray netted her first goal of the season in the 55th minute to jump start the offense in the second half for the Racers. Evans quickly followed with her second goal of the game in the 61st minute and McMurray added yet another goal a minute later in the 62nd.
McCoy added her second goal of the game in the 80th minute with Rebecca Shultz getting her first assist of the season on the play to give the Racers the 9-0 edge.
The Bulldogs would tally their lone goal of the game in the 85th minute off a Sophie Hargreaves penalty kick.
Goalkeeper Katie Walsh saw her first action of the season in goal and allowed one goal while recording two saves for her first victory on the early season.
The Racers out shot the Bulldogs 34-3.
In the first game of the day, Georgia State knocked off SIU-E, 2-0. The Racer Classic will resume Sunday at noon with Georgia State taking on Alabama A&M. The Racers will take the field at 2:30 p.m. against SIU-E in the final game of the Racer Classic.
