Duo help re-write Racers record books
After helping to re-write the Murray State record books, quarterback Casey Brockman and running back Mike Harris were honored by the Ohio Valley Conference as Brockman was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Harris was named the Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Sunday.
Brockman (Murray, Ky.) made the most out of his first start of the season as went 32-for-41 for 570 yards and seven touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown. He broke the single-game passing record of 553 yards (Justin Fuente, 1999) and six touchdowns (Michael Proctor, 1989). Brockman also set a single-half record as he tossed for 332 yards in the first half.
The 570 yards passing are the most by any quarterback at any level of football this season. The seven TD passes are also the most in the FCS since Drew Hubel (Portland State) threw for nine touchdowns in 2007.
Brockman seemed to get better as the game went on as the sophomore led the Racers back from a 14-point second-half comeback by throwing four touchdown passes in the final 15:10. He closed out the third quarter by connecting with Dexter Barnett on a 19-yard score. Just over a minute later, he found a streaking Marcus Harris down the left sideline for a 60-yard TD. Brockman and Barnett connected again midway through the fourth quarter before brockman and Marcus Harris sealed the game with their fifth scoring connection just over a minute later.
Lost in the shuffle of the aerial explosion was the solid ground attack led by Mike Harris (Broken Arrow, Okla.). The junior rushed for 166 of his career best 212 yards in the second half. He did his damage on 30 carries with two touchdowns. He became the first running back to go over 200 yards since Chad Cook ran for 223 yards against Indiana State in 2006. His 30 rushing attempts make him the first back to carry the ball 30 times in a game since Stevie Chaney carried the ball 41 times in 2005.
Mike Harris put the Racers ahead for good in the fourth quarter as he went 30 yards on the first play of a drive after the Bears fumbled the previous kickoff.
After missing the first two games of the season, Mike Harris has rushed for 416 yards and four touchdowns, and is averaging 104 yards per game on the ground.
