APSU Intercollegiate Results
The Murray State women's golf team brought home the championship of the Austin Peay Intercollegiate Tuesday at Clarksville CC in Clarksville, Tenn., and senior Caroline Lagerborg was the medalist for the 36-hole event.
The Racers, who built a seven-shot lead after a 298 in the first round on Monday, carded a 306 in the final round and won the event with a 605, good for the same stroke advantage over WKU who finished 611.
Caroline Lagerborg won for the first time as a collegian, as she bested the field of 77 players with scores of 72-73=145.
“Down the stretch I didn't know exactly what everyone had, but I had a good feeling that I was in front,” Lagerborg said. “I was pretty happy to win, but more for our team to win that's best we can do.”
Her win makes it two straight weeks with a Racer taking medalist honors after Alexandra Lennartsson won last week at Arkansas State.
It's the first time in Head Coach Velvet Milkman's 18 seasons at MSU that she's had back-to-back individual champions in which two different players have won.
“I'm happy for Caroline and our team,” she said. “We're playing well this fall and seeing Caroline win was one of the top moments in my career. She has worked so hard and come a long way since she was a freshman.”
Lagerborg had a three-shot win over three others who finished at 148: Jordan Magruder (WKU), Ornella Arrizon (Jacksonville State) and Chelsea Harris (Austin Peay).
MSU's winning effort also included some good play from the rest of the team that saw Morgan Cross fire rounds of 75-75=150 for a spot in fifth, while Alli Weaver rallied to a 12th place finish with scores of 79-76=155. Alexandra Lennartsson placed 18th with scores of 75-82=157, while Delaney Howson finished 27th with rounds of 76-83=159.
Alex Hinteregger played the event for MSU as an individual and finished 54th with scores of 84-82=166.
Jacksonville State (617), Austin Peay (623), Troy (628), Houston Baptist (630), Belmont (636), Eastern Kentucky (642), Eastern Illinois (653) and Tennessee Tech (658) made up the rest of the top-10, while SIUE (661) and Lipscomb (679) rounded out the field.
The Clarksville CC course played to a par of 72 and 5,960 yards.
Murray State set the tournament low 18 (298) and low 36 (604). The previous low 36 was held by the 2003 Racers (611). Lagerborg's 145 was one shot off the tournament record held by former Racer Lee-Ann Pace (2003). It is the second title won by Murray State at the APSU event with the first coming in 2003.
The Racers now have a first, second, third and sixth-place finish this fall and will wrap up the first part of the 2010-11 season Oct. 31 when they begin play at the Pat Bradley Invitational at Pelican Preserve GC in Fort Meyers, Fla.
