“I like the new rule change that allows us to start sooner, simply because it gives the student-athletes more time to absorb all the information that we are trying to teach them,” said head coach Rob Cross. “We get the same number of practices because we can still only practice 30 days in the 40-day span, but it still helps with the learning process. I am pleased with the work ethic and energy that the team is practicing with.”
MSU will have a new look this season, as the team has four newcomers on the roster and two new faces on the bench. The Racers added assistant coach Tony Cross over the summer. Tony Cross was the head coach at Belmont for 26 seasons and has the distinction of being one of the winningest coaches in the NCAA.
MSU also added a familiar face to the bench when Amber Guffey was named the team's graduate assistant manager. Guffey returns to the Racers after playing one season of profession basketball in Europe. The 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America of the Year averaged 24.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game her rookie season for Residence Walferdangre (Luxembourg).
Head Coach Rob Cross and the rest of the coaching staff have three more weeks to get the team ready for the opener. The Racers host St. Catharine (Nov. 13) and Mid-Continent (Nov. 15) at the CFSB Center.
Rob Cross will have a chance to see what the rest of the conference has Monday, Oct. 25 when he travels to Nashville, Tenn. for the Ohio Valley Conference's Annual Media Day. Head coaches from all 11 men's and women's teams in the OVC will be on hand for one-on-one interviews at Municipal Auditorium, the new site of the OVC Championship.
The public will get their first chance to see the new men's and women's basketball teams, Oct. 28 at the annual Fan Jam event. The event starts at 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center.
