A furious rally in the final minutes Friday afternoon ran out of time as the Murray State women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision against Southeast Missouri in an Ohio Valley Conference contest in the Racers' final home game of the 2010 season.
Before the match, the Racers celebrated the careers of seniors Tara Isbell, Laken Dirkes, Kalli McCoy, Katie Wilson, Audrey Wilson and Rachel Longley in a ceremony at mid-field.
Trailing 2-0 in the 88th minute, McCoy found the lower right corner of the net on a strike off of a blocked free kick from Sophie Hargreaves for her second goal of the season. The Racers were unable to mount another attack in the final two minutes as possession moved toward the MSU net at the end of the match.
The Redhawks scored the first goal of the match at 9:10 of the first half, knocking in a shot from inside the six-yard box after the Racers were unable to clear the ball. They added to their lead with a blast into the left side of the net on a 2-on-1 situation at 59:53.
Longley nearly gave MSU its first goal of the game in the 74th minute when her shot from 25 yards out cleared the Southeast Missouri goalkeeper, but the ball hit the crossbar and deflected in front of the goal line before being cleared.
“I felt like we didn't come out as a group and play as hard as we needed to,” head coach Beth Acreman said. “We've put a lot of pressure on ourselves for Sunday's game and it's going to be a tough matchup.”
The loss was the Racers' first OVC loss in nearly a month after compiling a 3-0-1 record in their previous four conference matches. Currently sitting in sixth place in the OVC with one match remaining, they can clinch a spot in the 2010 OVC Tournament with a win Sunday afternoon at Eastern Illinois. The final regular season contest of the year kicks off in Charleston, Ill., at 1:00 p.m.
