Junior scores rushing TD in six-straight games
After posting the fifth-best single-game rushing performance against Tennessee Tech on Saturday, junior Mike Harris was named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Sunday. The honor marked the third for Harris this season.
Harris (Broken Arrow, Okla.) rushed for 198 of his career-best 242 yards in the first half. He carried the ball 23 times and averaged an astounding 10.5 yards per carry. The 200-yard performance was the second of the season for Harris, making him just the third Racer running back to eclipse 200 yards at least two times in one season. Derrick Cullors accomplished it three times in 1995, and George Greenfield twice in 1972.
Harris put his name atop the Racer record books on the opening-drive as he took an option pitch on fourth-and-goal and raced around the right side for a four-yard touchdown. It was the sixth-straight game in which Harris scored a rushing touchdown, tieing him with Billy Blanchard (2002) for the all-time record.
After the Racer defense stopped the Golden Eagles on a fourth-down play at the one-yard line, Harris turned a clock-killing drive into a scoring drive. Harris took a handoff on first down and rushed for four yards. On the next play, Harris broke free into the secondary and weaved his way down the field for a 94-yard gain down to the one-yard line.
Despite playing in seven games this season, Harris has rushed for 880 yards and 10 touchdowns. He needs just 120 yards over the final two games to become just the 10th running back in MSU history to eclipse 1,000 yards. Harris is averaging 125.7 yards a game this season, ranking him 10th in the FCS.
