Johnson becomes first Racer punt returner to earn All-America recognition
Two members of the 2010 Murray State football team earned national recognition Wednesday, as wide receiver Marcus Harris and punt returner Dontrell Johnson were named to the The Sports Network/Fathead.com All-America Second Team. The honor is the second for Harris as he was also selected an Associated Press Second-Team All-America, while Johnson becomes the first Racer to earn All-America honors as a punt returner.
The 2010 season marks the second time in the last three seasons that the Racers have had multiple All-Americans. Linebacker Nathan Williams and defensive end Austen Lane were each honored following the 2008 season.
Harris (North St. Louis, Mo.) put together one of the finest single-season performances in school history, he hauled in 84 passes for 1,057 yards and nine touchdowns. He did all this despite missing two games with an injury. Harris leads the FCS in receptions per game (9.33), and ranks second in yards per game (117.4).
In just nine games, Harris ranks second on the single-season list for receptions and tied for second in yards. He also tied for fourth on single-season touchdown list, while putting his name in a tie at the top of the list with five 100-yard performances.
Johnson (Moultrie, Ga.) was electrifying in the return game, as he set a school record by returning two punts for touchdowns, while leading the FCS with a 22.80 yard average per return.
After having never returned a punt until the third game of the season, Johnson proved to be the spark plug that turned around the Racers season, as he took a punt 91 yards for a touchdown to help propel the Racers to a 52-16 victory over UT Martin. Just one week later, Johnson took a fourth-quarter punt 70 yards for a touchdown as MSU nearly pulled out an improbable comeback on the road against then-No. 4 Jacksonville State.
