South Dakota State scored three runs in third and added four more in the ninth as they handed Murray State its first loss of the season, 8-2, Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The loss came despite a solid pitching performance from starter Jake Donze (1-1). The left hander struck out a career-best 10 over six innings. He allowed three runs on five hits.
“That is Jake's best performance in his career here,” said head coach Rob McDonald. “I am really encouraged because he is a guy we need. That is two outings in a row that he has thrown well. For him to be making this improvement right now is crucial for our team's success.”
The Breds (4-1) got on the board in the second as Jonathan Craycraft walked and Colton Moore singled through the left side. Zach Noonan sacrificed both runners into scoring position before Elliot Frey's grounder to first bounced off the first baseman into shallow right field, allowing two runs to score.
SDSU (1-1) put together a two-out rally in the top of the third to take their first lead of the series. Billy Stitz started things with a bunt base hit, before scoring on Jeff Fish's bloop into shallow left center. Joel Blake singled to left field and Jesse Sawyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Zach Briggs plated two runners with a single to right center.
The Jacks added a run in the seventh as Stitz tripled to center and scored on Fish's groundout to third.
SDSU broke the game open in the ninth as they pushed across four runs as John Lee delivered an RBI single through the left side and Briggs was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Daniel Telford delivered the big blow with a two-run single just over the head of the leaping third baseman.
Cunningham got one run back in the home-half of the ninth as he led things off with a solo home run to right field.
The Breds out hit the Jacks 11-9, but left 11 runners on base.
“We had opportunities and weren't able to capitalize,” said McDonald. “We have been doing a good job of driving in runners, and today I thought we had good at-bats. There were times where we hit the ball solidly, but it was right at them or they made a play. And that's baseball.”
Cunningham led the Breds as he went 4-for-5 with a home run. Moore added three hits.
Shane Kraemer (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he tossed three shutout innings. Sam Pieczynski (1) earned the save after allowing one run on four hits over three innings.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow afternoon at noon.
