Evansville carried the momentum from yesterday's victory into this evening as the Purple Aces scored 13 runs in the first four innings to complete the two-game series sweep over Murray State with a 14-5 victory at Braun Stadium.
The Purple Aces (17-6) got on the board in the first as they took advantage of a pair of Breds errors helped push across three runs. Eric Stamets started the frame with a walk and a stolen base. With one out, Cody Fick reached on a fielding error. Trentt Copeland singled in a run and took second on the throw to third. The attempt to get Copeland at second went into right field, allowing a second run to score on the play. Following a wild pitch, John Day plated the third run with a sacrifice fly in foul territory in left field.
The Breds (18-15) got the offense going in the third as Bryan Propst singled through the left side and scored on Wes Cunningham's two-run homer to right center, his team-leading 14th of the season. Daniel Hill followed with a walk and later scored on Jason Laws two-run shot to left field, his second of the season.
UE did not waste any time in regaining the lead as the first two guys reached on base hits before Nate Smith drove in a run with a double down the left-field line. With two outs, Tom Heithoff delivered an RBI single to left and Alex Acheson scored a run with a groundout to third. Greg Wallace added an RBI single through the right side ahead of Fick's two-run single down the right-field line.
The Aces extended the lead in fourth as they sent 10 hitters to the plate and got a two-run double from Smith, and RBI single from Acheson and a wild pitch plated the fourth run.
MSU scored one run in the sixth as Kyle Tiernan reached second on a two-base fielding error. Frey followed by setting the school record as he was hit by his 33rd pitch in his career. With two outs, Cunningham drove in Tiernan with a single through the left side.
UE scored their final run of the game in the eighth as Wallace singled with two outs and scored on Fick's double off the fence in left center.
Seth McFarlin (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs, six earned, on nine hits over 2.2 innings. Sam Jones (3-2) picked up the victory in relief after allowing one unearned run on no hits and a walk in two innings.
Freshman Will Handlin made his collegiate debut and did not disappoint as he allowed just two hits over 3.1 shutout innings of work. He walked one and struck out three.
Propst, Cunningham and Craycraft each collected two hits for the Breds.
The Breds return to the diamond Saturday afternoon as they open a three-game non-conference series at SIU Edwardsville. The doubleheader is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
