Box Score
SIU Edwardsville designated hitter Joel Greatting delivered an RBI single to right field in the top of the eighth inning to score the second run of the inning as the Cougars rallied for a 5-4 victory over Murray State in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at SimmonsCooper Complex.
SIUE started the inning with catcher Brett Lancaster singling through the right side. A sacrifice bunt moved the pinch runner to second, where Dustin Brooks singled him home on a very close play at the plate. Greatting followed with a single to a similar spot for the game winner.
The Breds (18-16) got on the board in the first inning as Wes Cunningham doubled into the gap in right center and Bryan Propst walked. Daniel Hill drove in both runners with a double into deep right center.
The Cougars (11-22) got on the board in the third as Adam Eggemeyer was hit by a pitch with one out. Brooks followed with a bunt base hit that Eggemeyer was aggressive and took third on the play. Greatting made it a wise move as he delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
SIUE tied the game in the fourth as Michael Hopkins singled up the middle and went to second on a passed ball. After an infield single and a walk loaded the bases, James Vazquez delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Cougars gained their first lead of the game in the seventh as Greatting drew a one-out walk and went to third on Zach Hawkins' double off the fence in left field. Mitch Matecki drove in Greatting with a single to right field.
MSU wasted not time in regaining the lead as Cunningham started the eighth inning with a double down the left field line. Propst singled up the middle to score Cunningham and advanced to third as the ball was misplayed by the center fielder. Hill drove in Propst with a sacrifice fly to right center.
Matt McGaha (2-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Brent Rynearson (1-0) earned the win after allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits over two innings.
Cunningham and Elliott each collected two hits, while Hill drove in three runs.
The Breds and Cougars will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
