Errors Costly to Breds in 5-2 Defeat

A pair of Murray State miscues in the field in the second inning led to three unearned runs and that proved to the be the differnce as SIU Edwardsville completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Roy E. Lee Field.
The Cougars (12-22) got on the board in the second as Dustin Brooks reached on a fielding error and went to second on a single by Michael Hopkins. Zach Hawkins followed with a single through the left side that scored Brooks, and when the throw home hit Brooks and went into the dugout, Hopkins was awarded home and Zach Hawkins third. Thad Hawkins followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Breds (18-17) got a pair of runs back in the sixth as Bryan Propst singled up the middle and scored on Jason Laws' two-run home run to left field.
SIUE responded in the home-half of the inning as Adam Eggemeyer walked, stole second and went to third on the throwing error by the catcher. Mitch Matecki drove him in with a single through the right side. After a groundout and a stolen base moved the runner to third, Brooks drove him in with a double down the left-field line.
Jake Donze (5-4) took the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, on eight hits over six innings. Dustin Quattrocchi (4-3) earned the victory after allowing two runs on six hits and seven strikeouts in the complete game.
Elliot Frey led the Breds by going 3-for-3 with a double.
The Breds and Cougars play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
