Murray State got a solid start from right hander Alex Love and first baseman Wes Cunningham drove in four runs as the Thoroughbreds completed a three-game sweep over UT Martin with a 7-5 victory Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Love (4-0) had the longest outing of his career and held UTM to four runs, three earned, on five hits and two strikeouts over six innings. Matt McGaha (3) came out of the bullpen and allowed one unearned run on three hits and five strikeouts over three innings to earn the save.
The Breds (16-11, 4-2 OVC) finally broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning as they batted around in putting five runs on the board. Jason Laws started the rally as he rolled a single through the right side. Elliot Frey drew a two-out walk and Brandon Elliott plated Laws with a single to center field. Kyle Tiernan drove in the second run with a bloop single to left center, and Cunningham delivered the big blow with a no-doubt three-run shot to the parking lot in right center.
The Skyhawks (12-15, 1-5 OVC) got on the board in the fifth as Drew Mason hit a solo home run to left field.
MSU got the run back in the home-half of the fifth as Laws singled through the right side with one out. A failed pickoff attempt allowed Laws to reach third, where Cory Hodskins scored him with a chopper to short.
UTM responded in the sixth as Trey Karlen hit the first pitch of the inning over the fence in left field. Following a misplayed ball in left field, Ty Nelson hit a two-run home run to left center.
The Breds got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Brandon Elliott walked and went to third on a wild pitch. Cunningham drove him in with a double off the glove of a drawn-in second baseman.
The Skyhawks continued to get closer in the eighth as Karlen singled to start the inning and later scored on Nelson's double to left center.
Alex Boshers (0-4) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings.
Cunningham paced the Breds by going 3-for-5 with a double, home run and four RBIs. Moore and Laws each added a pair of hits.
The Breds return to the diamond Tuesday evening as they travel to take on #18 Western Kentucky. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
