Dr. Dave Gesler has accepted an appointment from Murray State President Dr. Randy Dunn to serve as the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) for Murray State University.
“We have had great representation over the past several years from Bill Whitaker in the FAR position,” MSU President Dr. Randy Dunn said. “I appreciate Dr. Gesler's willingness to serve in this vital role at Murray State and look forward to the new initiative and perspective he will bring to the position.”
“I appreciate Dr. Gesler's willingness to serve in this capacity,” Murray State Director of Athletics Allen Ward said. “His background and experience at Murray State will make him a real asset to our program. I look forward to working with him.”
"I am very thankful to have this opportunity,” Gesler said. “Being a past NCAA student-athlete and now faculty member, I believe I can bring a unique perspective, one that will enable me to serve in the best possible capacity, both for the academic side and the athletic side. I look forward to working with everyone in the athletic department and having a role in MSU athletics and academics."
Dave Gesler was born and raised in southern California and earned his bachelor's degree in rhetoric and communication from the University of California, Davis in 1993. While at UC Davis, he was a member of their nationally ranked NCAA D-II football team.
In 1998, Gesler earned his master's degree in organizational communication from MSU and taught upper level OC courses as an adjunct professor.
Ashley, Dave's wife, was accepted to the Master's program for nursing at Vanderbilt University, and the couple moved to Nashville, Tenn. Gesler was hired as a corporate trainer for Franke Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of commercial kitchen equipment, with more than 4,500 employees.
In 2003, Gesler earned his PhD in communication studies, with a secondary emphasis in statistics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He returned to Murray Sate in fall of 2003 and worked as assistant professor in the Department of Organizational Communication and was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor in 2009.
Gesler has four children, daughters, Eleri, 10, Gwyneth, 8, and Eowyn, 5, and son Sinjin, 2.
The NCAA mandated the role of the faculty athletics representative for all institutions in 1989.
The NCAA and Faculty Athletics Representatives Association define the role of the FAR to ensure that the academic institution establishes and maintains the appropriate balance between academics and intercollegiate athletics. The FAR ensures the academic integrity of an athletics program and the maintenance of the well-being of student-athletes.
The FAR serves as a liaison between the institution, athletics department, conference and the NCAA.
