Harris and Cullen continue to earn preseason recognition
Murray State senior kick returner Marcus Harris and junior kicker Kienan Cullen have been named as preseason favorites for the 2010College Football Performance Awards.
This is the first year the organization has made players from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) eligible for the awards. The purpose of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
As prominent scholars from a wide variety of disciplines note, CFPA eliminates the politics and biases that vitiate balloting-based awards. Furthermore, CFPA is the only awards organization to receive praise from both Republican and Democratic White House officials for promoting objectivity and fairness in college football.
The awards are given in 13 total categories, including Performer of the Year, Defensive Performer of the Year and positional Performers of the Year.
Harris (St. Louis, Mo.) led the Ohio Valley Conference and ranked seventh in the FCS last season after averaging 26.83 yards per kickoff return. His best game came in the 2009 season opener when he returned three kicks for 125 yards, including an 86 yard touchdown late in the third quarter. He followed that up by catching a 13-yard touchdown pass on the next offensive series, and then returning a punt 75 yards for a touchdown just two minutes later.
As a punt returner, Harris averaged 15 yards on seven returns.
Cullen (Louisville, Ky.) was successful on 14-of-17 field goals last season, including all nine attempts from inside 40 yards. He booted a career-long 48 yarder against Southeast Missouri. In his career, Cullen is 28-for-37 overall and 6-for-11 from over 40 yards. Cullen was also a perfect 22-for-22 in extra-point attempts in 2009.
