Murray State closed the books on its 2010 Preseason Camp as the Racer football team held a spirited two-hour scrimmage Saturday morning on the turf at Stewart Stadium.
The scrimmage gave the coaches one last chance to evaluate the players as the team prepares for its season opener against Kent State on Sept. 2.
The offense was able to sustain a drive on its opening possession as quarterback Jeff Ehrhardt helped lead the team on a 12-play drive. The drive started with back-to-back completions to Marcus Harris for a first down. Ehrhardt later connected with Daniel Ard on a 13-yard connection. Running back Dexter Barnett picked up a first down with an eight-yard pickup before Ehrhardt capped the drive with a 20-yard connection with Harris.
Junior wide receiver Patrick Robertson took a pair of screen passes on the second drive and turned them into big gains, but the defense stiffened and stopped the drive.
“It felt good to be out there day,” said Robertson. “We are becoming better as a team and we are working harder, buying into the program that Coach Hatcher has brought in.”
The defense found its way into the endzone on the next series as cornerback Dontrell Johnson stepped in front of a pass and returned the interception 32-yards for the touchdown.
The Racers showed a much improved ground game as running back Mike Harris broke off a pair of big runs to set the offense up in the red zone. A few plays later, quarterback Casey Brockman found Ard for a touchdown.
Freshman quarterback Marshyl Rothman showed his ability as a runner as he weaved his way into the endzone from 14 yards out.
“I thought we had our moments. I think we battled well and at times we looked really good,” said Ehrhardt. “There are still little things that we need to work on, and as Coach Hatcher says, we don't have to be ready until Sept. 2. I thought we had good enthusiasm and played together as a team. We showed glimpses of what we can do and are definitely looking forward to the season opener.”
The Racers will return to the practice field Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The team will also practice at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, before taking off Wednesday for the first day of classes.
