The Murray State football team conducted it's final in helmets only with the newcomers taking the field in the morning, and the returners hit the turf in the early afternoon.
The coaches continued the teaching phase of practice in preparation for the team putting on shoulder pads for the first time on Friday.
The team will come together for its first full-team practice Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m.
Head Coach Chris Hatcher
On Thursday morning's practice:
“We knew where to go today in practice. When the horn blew everybody was going somewhere and that is always tough on a new player. I thought we got better. We were lucky it was a lot cooler today. I say we, but the players were lucky, I like it kind of a little warm. I think we are on track. The intensity will pick up when we all come together and the speed and pace of practice will pick up. It was really a slow, paced practice for us just because of all the teaching that is going on. We want to make sure we evaluate everybody because coming out of Spring we were very thin. Depth is a concern, but I think we have some young players, that if they are coachable, will be guys that will be able to help us this season.”
On putting on pads Friday:
“You always look forward to that. That is the best evaluation you can get when you put the gear on. Some of the guys that look good out here may not be quite as good in pads, and then vice versa, there are some guys out here that don't play real good here, but when you put the pads on they know what to do. Tomorrow will be a big day, but again we will be a split squad and will take is slow. When we come together on Saturday is when the tempo will pick up and we will start cutting the squad down a little bit to the guys that we will really be counting on to play this season.”
Senior Linebacker Harry McCall
On first practices of Camp:
“So far we are just happy to be out here, even though it is hot. The first couple days is a learning experience. We have the rookies out here with some of the veterans and we are all still trying to learn. It has been so far, though.”
On putting the pads on for the first time Friday:
“It's like when you are a little kid and everybody waits for the first day you get to hit. Some people will be a little nervous, but you just have to get that first hit out of the way. After that it will be fun and we will see who has what. There will be a lot of enthusiasm and people will want to hit somebody.”
Junior Running Back Tyler Lavea
On first practices as a Racer:
“I had high expectations. I knew it was going to be a tough practice, with a tough team and tough coaches. The tempo is different. I am from California and we are a lot more laid back, but here we are always on the run and I like that about this practice. Coaches are always motivating us so we never make the same mistake twice.”
On putting the pads on for the first time Friday:
“This helmet stuff isn't enough. We have all been waiting a long time to put some pads on and hit somebody. That is when the true talent comes out. Anybody can be an all-star in shorts and a helmet, but we find out who the real athletes are when we put the pads on tomorrow.”
