The Murray State football team held its final split-squad practices of preseason Friday afternoon as the newcomers took the field on a nice cool morning inside Stewart Stadium, and the returners endured plenty of sunshine in the afternoon.
Friday's practices also marked the first time the team was in pads and many of the players were eager to get out there and hit somebody. The team continued with plenty of teaching sessions, but gone were the dummies.
“I think we are getting better each and every day. This morning we had all the young guys out again and this was the last split-squad session,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “We are seeing some good things, especially out of some of the new boys at running back and defensive back, which is an area that we really need to get some depth, especially for special team's purposes. I am excited about the way the guys are learning the schemes and I think we are getting better, but only time will tell.”
Down in the trenches, the morning session was dominated by the defensive lineman, but the offensive line was able to redeem themselves in the afternoon session.
On the other end of the field, the wide receivers and secondary went head-to-head in one-on-one drills. In the afternoon, junior Dontrell Johnson stepped in front of a pass for an interception.
Special teams continue to be worked into every practice, and today was no different as the team worked on punt coverage and punt block, as well as field goal.
The team will come together for its first full squad practice Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. inside Stewart Stadium. The team will be in helmets and shoulder pads before taking the field in full pads Sunday afternoon.
