The Murray State offense rebounding on Monday to put together a pair of solid practices on the muggy day on the turf at Stewart Stadium. A late morning thunderstorm in between the first two practices didn't do much to drop the humidity levels.
“This morning we started off very slow and I was very disappointed in our tempo. We were feeling sorry for ourselves with three-a-day practices,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “This afternoon we came out with more intensity and had more fun. We enjoyed practice more. I thought we got better in that aspect, but still a long way's to go. After today's practice, at least we have a little fire about us and have a bunch of guys that have a little want to.”
After a slow start to the morning session, the team came together and finished on a much stronger note than they started.
A much better attitude was in the air as the Racers took the field for the afternoon practice. Both sides of the ball made plays during inside run and skelly. When the team came to together to work on third-down situations, the offense forged ahead.
On the opening series, Jeff Ehrhardt found Patrick Robertson down the right sideline for a long scoring strike. The duo would later hook up on another long pitch and catch. The offense continued to move the ball as running back Dexter Barnett took a short pass and ran for a first down. Ja-Vonta Trotter would help the offense get into the endzone again with a short touchdown grab, and Marcus Harris made a highlight-reel leaping catch in the left corner of the endzone.
Quarterback Marshyl Rothman may have had the best run of the day on a broken play. The freshman became live when he turned in his red jersey for the white one of the offense and weaved his way down the field for a 30-yard touchdown run.
The defense stepped up later in the drills as they were able to hold the offense at the end of practice.
The practice ended with the ball being placed on the two-yard line and the offense having two plays to score. The first-team defense made a goaline stand on back-to-back running plays, but the second-team offense was able to score on a pass to Drew Hall in the right flat on it's first play. It all came down to a winner-take-all series between the first-team offense and defense. Prince Nwagbara got the handoff on the first play and took the ball inside the one yard line. On the next play, Nwagbara pushed the pile, but was ruled down short of the endzone, giving the series to the defense.
The team will hold a short practice at 7:15 p.m. this evening, before holding a 9:30 a.m. practice Tuesday morning.
