Late Overtime Goal Downs Racers Against IPFW

After fighting back in the final minutes of regulation against IPFW, the Murray State women's soccer team lost a heartbreaking 2-1 match in the final seconds of overtime Friday afternoon on a soggy pitch at Cutchen Field.
Tied 1-1 in the final minute of the second overtime period, MSU goalkeeper Tara Isbell deflected a shot by Felicia Jones from the left edge of the box. Unable to corral the deflection, Alicia Jones knocked in the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining in the match.
The goal came after an earlier IPFW goal in the same overtime was disallowed after it was ruled the ball was knocked out of Isbell's possession.
Midfielder Sophie Hargreaves tied the match in the 88th minute, taking a pass over the IPFW defense from Katie Wilson as she held off the Mastadon defense long enough to find the back of the net for her team-leading third goal of the season.
The Racers (1-4-2) had earlier scoring opportunities in the second half, both coming of the foot of forward Rachel Wright. Wright skimmed the cross bar with 20 minutes remaining in regulation with a shot in front of the net off a cross from the right side by Laken Dirkes. She was stopped short two minutes later on a breakaway attempt off of a through ball from midfield by Charlotte Tronsden as her point-blank shot hit the IPFW keeper and ricocheted clear of the net.
Felicia Jones put the Mastadons (2-4) ahead with the first lead of the match in the 44th minute by beating Isbell with a ball that deflected into the goal off of the right goalpost.
IPFW held a slight 22-to-21 shot advantage in the contest and put 13 shots on goal to the Racers' six.
Isbell tallied 10 saves in net for the Racers, including a diving stop to preserve the one goal deficit just over a minute before Hargreaves' equalizer.
The match was MSU's fifth overtime match in seven games this season.
The Racers travel to SIUE on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. match and return to Cutchin Field Sept. 17 for a 3:00 p.m. kick-off against Louisiana Tech.
