The Murray State women's soccer team received a game-tying goal from Shauna Wicker with 18 minutes to play in regulation, but gave up the winning strike with less than four minutes remaining in a 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference loss Sunday afternoon against Morehead State in Morehead, Ky.
Wicker's strike, her third of the season and third consecutive goal for the Racer offense, came over a minute after Murray State (1-9-2, 0-2-0 OVC) was left with just 10 players remaining on the pitch when Ashley Fraser received her second yellow card of the match. Wicker played a ball sitting in front of the net after Katie Wilson's shot attempt was saved by the Morehead State (5-6-0, 2-0-0) keeper.
The Racers were unable to keep the match tied before the end of 90 minutes as Sam Toepfer scored for the Eagles from the left side of the box for the game-winning goal.
“The team fought hard but with the unlucky call from the official, we were put in a tough situation and it was hard to hold on,” head coach Beth Acreman said. “I saw some very positive things today including another great effort from Shauna Wicker to get us the goal. We are looking to next weekend and the things we can do to get the results we need.”
Morehead State recorded the first goal of the match early in the first half when Erin Adams scored on a direct kick off of a Murray State foul at 13:17.
Wicker and Wilson led the Racer offense with two shots and one shot on goal each.
Murray State continues conference play next weekend at Cutchin Field, hosting Jacksonville State Oct. 1 at 3:00 p.m. and Austin Peay Oct. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
