The Murray State women's soccer team welcomes Jacksonville State Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Austin Peay Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to Cutchin Field as the Racers play their first two home Ohio Valley Conference matches of the season.
MSU (1-9-2, 0-2 OVC) dropped a pair of one-goal decisions last weekend in opening conference play, falling 1-0 against Eastern Kentucky before dropping a 2-1 contest against Morehead State. Freshman Shauna Wicker scored her third goal of the season at 72:13 to tie the match, but the Eagles scored the game-winner with under four minutes remaining to pick up the victory.
“Obviously we were disappointed with the results, but going into this weekend we know what we're going to be going up against and the girls have been training hard ready to get some better results,” head coach Beth Acreman said.
Jacksonville State (3-8-1, 1-1) split its first two OVC matches, defeating Southeast Missouri 2-1 and losing to Eastern Illinois 2-0. Chelsea Pelletier leads the Gamecocks with seven goals through 12 games and is one of two JSU players with multiple goals on the season. MSU picked up a 3-1 road win in the lone matchup last season between the two schools.
Austin Peay (9-3, 1-1) also split its opening matches of conference play, shutting out Eastern Illinois 1-0 before being blanked by Southeast Missouri State 1-0. The Lady Govs lead the OVC in total scoring with 26 goals scored on the season. The Racers shut them out 1-0 last season with a late second half goal.
“Every single game the rest of the season is extremely important,” Acreman said. “Training hard and getting everyone healthy is something we have to work hard at on a weekly basis, and I think we're preparing well for two tough games this week. Our attack is still lacking on shots taken during games and goals allowed, we need to minimize the goals going into the back of our net. We need more shots on offense than we saw this past weekend.”
MSU takes a break from conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 6 for one final non-conference match at Evansville before hosting Tennessee Tech at 1:00 p.m. Oct. 10.
