Harris and Johnson earn second honor of week
A trio of Racer football players received national recognition from the College Football Performance Awards Sunday evening as Dontrell Johnson was named the Punt Returner of the Week, while Mike Harris (running back) and Nathan Brinkley (cornerback) earned honorable mention honors.
Johnson (Moultrie, Ga.) was also named the Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week after averaging 49.3 yards on three punt returns. He provided the early spark at the beginning of the game as he fielded a punt on his own nine and took it back 91 yards for a touchdown in the second longest punt return in school history.
Johnson help set up the Racers third touchdown of the first quarter as his second punt return covered 35 yards and set up the MSU offense in Skyhawk territory. He nearly broke to open on his third punt return as he went 22 yards to the UTM 38-yard line in setting up a field goal.
Harris (Broken Arrow, Okla.) burst had his best all-around game as he accumulated 164 total yards and two touchdowns in the first start of his career. He carried the ball 17 times for 119 yards and a touchdown, and added five receptions for 45 yards and a score. He became the first Racer back to go over 100 yards since the 2009 season opener against Kentucky Wesleyan and the first Racer to go over the century mark against an FCS team since Charlie Jordan went for 117 yards against Jacksonville State in 2008.
Harris got his first touch of the game late in the first quarter and scampered 20 yards. On the next drive, Harris rushed twice for 24 yards and followed up an eight-yard reception by taking a short pass and weaving his way through the Skyhawk defense for a 25-yard touchdown.
Brinkley (Clewiston, Fla.) continues to lead the Racer secondary as he intercepted a pair of passes against the Skyhawks. With UTM driving midway through the second quarter, Brinkley stepped in front of a Derek Carr pass at the Racer 15-yard line to intercept the pass and put an end to the drive. His second interception of the game came late in the third quarter after the Skyhawks recorded a safety. On the second play of the drive, Brinkley undercut a UTM receiver on the Racer sideline and returned the interception five yards to set up the Racer offense in Skyhawk territory.
The Racers return to action Saturday evening as they travel to face #4 Jacksonville State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
