Johnson earns second national honor; third honor overall
The awards continue to roll in for punt returner Dontrell Johnson as the junior was named The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week, the organization announced Monday afternoon.
The honor is the third for Johnson this week as he was named the Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week and College Football Performance Awards Punt Returner of the Week on Sunday.
Johnson (Moultrie, Ga.) was honored after proving to the spark the Racers needed in their 52-16 victory over UT Martin. Returning punts for just the second time in his career, Johnson dropped back deep just under two minutes into the game. He fielded the punt on the nine-yard line and broke the to right where he received a knockout block from Jordan Sklba and used his speed to outrun the Skyhawks down the sideline for the 91-yard touchdown. It marked the second longest punt return in Racer history, behind only the 100-yard return by Phil Foster against Morehead State in 1950.
Just under five minutes later and the Racers up 14-0, Johnson returned his second punt 35 yards to set up the offense in Skyhawk territory. Seven plays later, Duane Brady went in from two-yard out to help push the advantage to 21-0.
Johnson finished the game by averaging 49.3 yards on three punt returns. On the season, Johnson is averaging and FCS-best 28.3 yards per punt return. As a team, the Racers rank third in the FCS at 20.2 yards per return.
