Playing its fourth overtime match in five contests this season, the Murray State women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat Friday night at Tulsa.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Racer senior midfielder Katie Wilson scored her first goal of the season off of an assist from Laken Dirkes in the 72nd minute to tie the match at one apiece.
The Golden Hurricane (4-1) picked up the game-winner with just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime session as Rebecca Handley scored her first of the year with a header from five yards out.
MSU keeper Tara Isbell kept the Racers (1-2-2) in the contest, making 11 saves on the evening as Tulsa held a 22-9 shot advantage.
“We defended extremely well tonight,” head coach Beth Acreman said. “It was tough to play it away but I was pleased with the energy and effort the team displayed.”
Tulsa broke through early in the second half for its first goal on Claire Nicholson's team-leading fifth goal of the year. Her shot off a cross from 13 yards out gave the Golden Hurricane its first lead of the game.
Wilson and Audrey Wilson picked up yellow cards for MSU as the Racers were whistled for 29 fouls.
Murray State closes out the two game road trip at Oklahoma State on Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. The Racers return home to Cutchin Field Sept. 10 for a 3:00 p.m. match against IPFW.
