Racers Sweep Redhawks at Racer Arena

The Murray State volleyball team broke a two-match losing streak with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-14) sweep of Southeast Missouri at Racer Arena. The Racers are now 6-19 overall and 6-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference action.

MSU was led by freshman Beth Mahurin, with a career-best 13 kills and five digs. Mahurin hit at a .346 (13k-4e-26ta) pace and added two blocks. Junior Lia Havili tallied her 12th double-double of the season with 31 assists and 10 digs, while junior Cassy Woolverton added 11kills. Defensively, the Racers were paced by sophomore Katlyn Hudson, with 13 digs, and senior Kayleah Sauer, who tallied a season-best three service aces.
The first set was a close battle, with six tie scores and two lead changes. The score was knotted at 17, when SEMO went on a 2-1 run to take the lead. However, the Racers followed with a 5-1 run that gave them a 23-20 advantage. MSU went up 24-21 before the Redhawks forced extra points with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 24. The Racers earned the 26-24 win after a SEMO error and a service ace by Sauer.
MSU took an early lead in set two, before the Redhawks fought back to force nine ties and five lead changes throughout the set. The final tie came at 15-all when the Racers went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. SEMO followed with a 2-0 run, but MSU finished off the set with a 6-0 run to earn the 25-17 win. During the final run Sauer tallied two-straight service aces.
Set three was all Racers. After SEMO earned the first point, MSU went on a 9-0 run that gave them the lead for good. The Redhawks followed with a 2-0 run, but the Racers countered with a 7-0 run to push the lead to 16-3. MSU kept the momentum high and earned the 25-14 win.
The Racers held advantages in all statistical categories on the box score, with their biggest advantages in hitting percentage and service aces. MSU hit at a .248 (43k-16e-109ta) pace and allowed SEMO to hit just a .061 (28k-21e-115ta) mark. The Racers also tallied a season-high seven service aces to the Redhawks one.
MSU will be in action again Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in Racer Arena when they host UT Martin. The Racers will then host Eastern Illinois Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
Notes: Freshman Tyla Bailey saw her second action of the season, garnering her first career kill…Sauer in now just 74 digs from the No. 1 spot on the Racers digs list…she currently has 2,050.
