Murray State nearly erased a seven-run deficit as they Breds rallied and nearly tied the game in the ninth inning before falling to Georgia State, 14-10, Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga.
The Breds (8-11) got on the board in the second inning as Brandon Eggenschwiler started the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on Zach Noonan's single to right center. After a sacrifice bunt from Cody Larson, Wes Warren drove in a run with a bloop just over the head of the second baseman. Elliot Frey followed by blooping a base hit over the head of the first baseman, scoring Noonan from third.
The Panthers (18-4) put together a big third inning as they pushed across five runs on only one hit. They loaded the bases with two outs on a walk and two hit batters. Brandon Williams followed with a chopper to third that hit the lip of the grass and took a bad hop for an RBI single. After a bases load walk and a wild pitch scored two runs, two more runs came into score on a fielding error off the bat of Ryan Fleming.
MSU crept back into the game in the fifth as Ty Stetson singled up the middle and Brandon Elliott followed with a walk. Travis Isaak drove in both runners with a double to right center, and hustled to third when the ball was misplayed. The Breds looked to have tied the game on Jacob Rhodes fly ball to left field, but Isaak was called out at third for leaving too early.
GSU got the two runs back in the home-half of the inning as a pair of singles put runners on the corners with one out. The first run scored on a suicide squeeze by Drew Shields, while the second run came in on a single by Shane Hammond off the glove of a diving third baseman.
MSU pushed across an unearned run in the sixth as Warren's grounder to second with two outs was booted. Frey followed by delivering an RBI single to right field.
The Panthers put together their second five-run inning of the game in the sixth to extend the advantage to seven.
The Breds had an answer in the seventh as Isaak walked with one out and went to third on Rhodes' double off the top of the wall in right center. After a walk to Eggenschwiler, Noonan drove in two runs with a double into the right-field corner. Larson followed with an RBI groundout to short, and Warren plated the fourth run with a single to left center.
GSU got two of the runs back in the bottom of the seventh as Williams delivered a run-scoring single through the right side and Wood followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.
MSU pushed across a run in the eighth as they loaded the bases as Elliott and Isaak were hit by pitches, and Rhodes singled through the right side. A double-play ball followed that scored the only run of the inning.
The Breds made it interesting in the ninth as they loaded the bases with two outs as Stetson reached on a wild pitch strikeout, Elliott was hit by a pitch and Isaak singled to right field. Rhodes nearly tied the game as his fly ball to right field was caught on the warning track.
Justin Malone (4-0) earned the victory after allowing four runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings. Luke Shuemaker (2-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs, five earned, on six hits over five innings.
Isaak, Noonan and Frey each went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Warren went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Noonan also scored three runs, while Elliott and Eggenschwiler scored two each.
The Breds return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon as they play host to Mid-Continent. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
