Breds Falter in Midweek Contest

Warren goes 3-for-4 with an RBI in the loss

Murray State struggled at the plate Tuesday afternoon as the Breds dropped their fifth-straight game in falling, 5-1, to Mid-Continent at Reagan Field.
The Cougars (13-10) scratched across an unearned run in the second inning as Sam Cheng singled to center and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt. William Ruthven scored the runner with a soft groundout to second.
MCU added to the lead in the fourth as a single was followed by a hit batter and a passed ball to put runners on second and third with one out. Robert Thomas drove in a run with a dribble up the first-base line, and Daniel Edwards followed with a blooper just over the head of the first baseman to score the second run.
The Cougars extended the lead in the sixth as a leadoff double came around to score on a single to center field, and a second run came on a bloop to shallow center with two outs.
The Breds (8-12) finally got on the board in the ninth as Brandon Eggenschwiler reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on Cody Larson single to right field. Wes Warren drove in the only run for MSU with a single through the left side.
Kyle Cornett(0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and four strikeouts over five innings. Allen Haase (3-1) earned the complete-game victory after limiting the Breds to one runs on eight hits over the nine innings.
Warren led the offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Brandon Elliott added two hits.
The Breds return to action this weekend as they open Ohio Valley Conference action against Austin Peay on March 26-27. First pitch of the Saturday doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Reagan Field.
