Murray State softball closed out a three-game home stand by dropping a 5-0 contest against Eastern Illinois Sunday afternoon at Racer Field.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Racers had a chance at making a comeback with the bases loaded. Megan Glosser and Jenna Bradley got the offense going with back-to-back one out hits into the outfield to give MSU runners on first and second. Glosser advanced to third on a fly out to right field, and the Racers filled the bases when Ellyn Troup was hit by a pitch. Eastern Illinois starting pitcher Amber May picked up her fourth strike out of the day a batter later, catching Stephanie Mattocks looking to end the Murray State threat.
Carly Willert once again was the driving force behind the EIU offense, leading the Panthers with three runs and scoring her first in the top of the first inning as they took an early 1-0 lead.
Willert hit her third home run of the weekend later in the game, leading off the fifth inning with a deep shot to center field to give Eastern Illinois a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers added two more runs in the sixth inning and a solo tally in the seventh in the 5-0 victory.
Chelsey Sullivan took the loss for Murray State (4-15, 0-5 OVC) in the circle, walking four and giving up three hits as two runs scored in four innings with four strikeouts.
May picked up the win for Eastern Illinois (16-5, 3-0 OVC). She gave up four hits in seven innings and struck out four.
The Racers return to action Tuesday, March 22 with a two game set at SIU Edwardsville. They return home next weekend, hosting Tennessee Tech March 26-27.
