“This was a really hard decision for me to make,” said Kluempers. “But I know that it is the best decision for both me and the team. I would have missed more days of practice and games due to the requirements on my nursing program with clinicals next year than I would have been with the team. This way I can do what is best for me to focus on my career in nursing and the coaches can give my spot to a player that will be able to devote more time to the team. My family and I will be at as many games as possible to cheer the Racers to victory.”
The fourth year of the nursing program at Murray State includes clinical hours for course credit that require students to use the skills that they have been accumulating over their studies to actual nursing experiences in local hospitals and other health care settings.
“I am very proud to have had the opportunity to have Kristen as a member of the Murray State women's basketball family,” said head coach Rob Cross. “Every student-athlete at MSU is here, first and foremost, to receive an education. Kristen made the right decision for her to ensure that she receives the best education possible in her chosen field. Kristen will always be a part of the Racers' basketball family and I wish her the best of luck.”
Kluempers played in 75 games over the past three seasons for the Racers, including all 30 games in 2010-11. The Fishers, Ind., native averaged 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game for MSU in her career. The forward had a career-best 16 points against Marshall (Dec. 29, 2009), the team she had originally signed before attending Murray State.
