Murray State pushed across four runs in the fourth and sixth innings to erase an early deficit and complete a doubleheader sweep of UT Martin with a 12-4 victory Saturday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.
The Breds (12-13, 3-1 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Brandon Elliott ripped an 0-2 pitch just inside the bag at third for a standup double. With two outs, Jacob Rhodes singled up the middle to score Elliott from second.
The Skyhawks (5-21, 1-4 OVC) took their first lead of the game in the second as a double and a walk were followed by a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Matt Milligan made the Breds pay with a two-run single up the middle.
MSU tied the game in the third inning as Ty Stetson singled up the middle and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Elliott. Travis Isaak put runners on the corners with a single through the left side and Rhodes followed with a run-scoring single through the right side.
UTM regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as Matt Young drew a leadoff walk and stole second. After a wild pitch moved the runner to third, Chase Okey delivered a run-scoring single to left field.
The Breds got the offense going in the fourth inning by pushing across four runs in the frame. Zach Noonan started the inning with a double to straight-away center field. Cody Larson singled to put runners on the corners and Elliot Frey followed with a fielder's choice chopper to third that loaded the bases as Noonan was able to dive back safely to third. Stetson and Elliott each drove in runs with a groundouts, ahead of RBI doubles from Isaak and Rhodes.
A throwing error in the top of the sixth helped MSU to push across four more runs. Frey reached second on the throwing error and Stetson followed with a bunt single. Elliott plated Frey with a sacrifice bunt. Isaak added an RBI single up the middle and Rhodes continued his big day with a single through the right side. Brandon Eggenschwiler reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Noonan drew a bases loaded walk before Larson drove in the fourth run with a single through the left side.
The Skyhawks plated run in the sixth on a solo home run from Jordan Owen.
MSU added to its lead in the seventh as Stetson walked and stole second. Isaak plated the runner with a single up the middle, before later scoring on Eggenschwiler's single back through the middle.
Jake Donze (4-1) earned the victory after allowing three runs on four hits, four walks and four strikeouts over five innings. Danny Kelley (0-4) took the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits over 3.2 innings.
Rhodes led the offense by going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Isaak went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Stetson added two hits and scored four runs.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Skyhawk Field.
