The Murray State football squad ran through their first extended scrimmage in running more than 70 plays Saturday at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky.
The scrimmage was a mixture of special teams work, as well as drives starting at the 40 yard line, 20 yard line and goal line situations.
“The defense got off to a great start, but I thought they wore down as the scrimmage went on,” MSU Head Coach Chris Hatcher said. “All in all, we saw some good things out of our guys today, they had some highs and some lows. We came out of the first big scrimmage of the spring with at least a lot of film that we can teach off of and clean some things up.”
Unofficially, Racer quarterbacks were efficient in throwing the ball with a completion rate of 70 percent (27-of-37, 363 yards), while the rushing attack produced 182 yards on 36 carries.
“I think we've got our receivers in the right spots now,” Hatcher said. “We've got about seven of them that we feel good about right now. Our defense did a good job of tackling the ball and stripping it. That's one thing we've stressed this spring and we saw that come to fruition today.”
On the defensive side of the line, the improved Racer squad turned in an estimated seven sacks, nine tackles for loss and forced three fumbles.
The big plays in the scrimmage included a Duane Brady 20 yard touchdown catch on a screen pass from Casey Brockman. Mike Harris took a similar catch and set up a touchdown with a 40 yard play. Brockman also hit Hannibal Beauford and Ja-Vonta Trotter on short TD passes. Tyler Lavea and Spencer Phillips scored on short TD runs during the goal line portion of the scrimmage.
Victor Daniels and Erik Fennell each had interceptions in the end zone to stop scoring tries.
With the annual Blue-God Bowl coming April 14, the Racers have nearly two remaining weeks in the all-important spring practice season. MSU will practice at Stewart Stadium Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 3:20 p.m. each day, and then have another scrimmage Saturday April 9 at 10 a.m.
