Breds Ride Four-Run Fourth To Victory in Opener

Murray State scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and that was more than enough as the Breds handed Eastern Illinois 4-1 in the first game of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Coaches Stadium.

The Breds (14-22, 5-4 OVC) got the bats going in the fourth inning with Jacob Rhodes delivering a leadoff opposite-field home run to left field. Brandon Eggenscwiler followed with a single to third, Paul Ritzheimer singled through the left side and Zach Noonan had a bunt single to third where nobody covered first. With two outs, Elliot Frey beat out a single to short to drive in a run, before Ty Stetson plated two runners with a double just inside the bag at first base.

The Panthers (13-22, 6-6 OVC) got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as a single and a walk put the first two runners on. After a sacrifice bunt, Jacob Reese plated a run with a fielder's choice to short.

Jake Donze (6-2) was on top of his game Saturday as he retired the first nine hitters he faced. He was able to get out of a pair of two on, nobody out situations, by getting a pair of double-play groundouts. He finished the game by allowing one run on four hits and a pair of strikeouts in the seven-inning complete game. Mike Hoekstra (5-3) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits over five innings.

Ritzheimer led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Eggenschwiler added a pair of hits as the Breds collected 11 in the game.

The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
