BOX SCORE
Murray State nearly completed its first ninth-inning comeback of the season as Travis Isaak lined a ball to the right side that was snared by the first baseman, who calmly stepped on first base to complete the double play and end the game as Southeast Missouri escaped with a 5-4 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
MSU entered the inning trailing by two runs, but got the first two runners on as Cody Larson and Colton Moore drew back-to-back walks. Elliot Frey put down a bunt that he beat out for a hit, and the throw got away from the first baseman and allowed a run to score. After the bases were loaded on a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Isaak ripped the 0-2 pitch that wound up ending the game.
A pair of walks hurt the Breds in the first inning as it helped the Redhawks (26-15, 9-5 OVC) push across three runs with two outs. Bret Russell drove in the first run with a single to center and Casey Jones plated two more runs with a triple to right center.
SEMO added a run in the third as Nick Harris delivered a leadoff home run down the left-field line.
The Breds (14-24, 5-6 OVC) got on the board in the bottom of the third as Brandon Elliott hit a solo home run to left field with two outs.
MSU added a pair of runs in the fifth after Colton Moore and Elliot Frey drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Wes Warren followed with a bunt base hit to third that was thrown away, allowing Moore to score and both runners advance. Elliott drove in his second run of the game as he followed with a groundout to short.
The Redhawks scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the ninth as three-straight base-on-balls with two outs pushed across a run.
Tyler Beers (3-6) was the tough luck loser as he allowed four runs on nine hits and six strikeouts over eight innings. He got stronger as the game went on, allowing just four hits after the third inning.
Jordan Underwood (4-0) earned the victory after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits over six innings. Logan Mahon (7) earned the save after allowing an unearned run on one hit and three walks over two innings.
Elliott led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a home run and a pair of RBIs. Zach Noonan, Larson and Moore each drew a pair of walks.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
