A costly error in the top of the third inning helped open the flood gates for Southeast Missouri to push across six runs in the inning on the way to a 17-5 victory over Murray State in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
After the first hitter of the third was retired, the next two hitters reached by way of the walk. Nick Harris drove in the first run with a single through the left side. Michael Adamson followed with a high fly ball that was dropped in foul territory. On the next pitch, Adamson delivered a towering three-run home run to left field. Blake Slattery later delivered an RBI single and Taylor Heon drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Breds (14-25, 5-7 OVC) manufactured a run in the bottom of the first inning as Ty Stetson drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a Brandon Elliott sacrifice bunt. Travis Isaak plated the runner with a line-drive single just over the head of the second baseman.
The game was put to rest in the fourth as the Redhawks (27-15, 10-5 OVC) pushed across 11 runs on seven hits, including two home runs.
MSU showed some offense in the seventh inning as Wes Warren beat out a single to third base and Zach Noonan was hit by a pitch. With one out, Nick Paradossi singled through the right side to load the bases for Stetson to deliver a three-run double to gap in right center. Elliott drove him in with a triple down the left-field line, before scoring on an Isaak double to left field. Colton Moore drove in the final run of the inning with bloop single to right field.
Brad LaBruyere (7-1) earned the victory after allowing five runs on six hits over 6.1 innings. Jake Donze (6-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits over 2.1 innings.
Isaak led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Stetson drove in three runs and scored a pair. Elliott extended his hit streak to seven games with a triple in the seventh.
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
