BOX SCORE
Murray State found its offense just in time as the Breds battled through the rain to score six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and let mother nature do the rest in handing Southeast Missouri a 6-2 defeat in a rain-shortened five-inning game Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Redhawks (27-16, 10-6 OVC) got on the board in the fourth inning as they had a runner on second with two outs and Trent Moses golfed a ball over the fence for a two-run home run.
The Breds (15-25, 6-7 OVC) rallied in the bottom of the inning as they collected seven hits and pushed across six runs. Brandon Elliott started the inning with a single through the left side and Travis Isaak followed with a single to shortstop. After a groundout moved up both runners, Brandon Eggenschwiler drove in a run with a groundout to second.
Business picked up with outs as Paul Ritzheimer delivered an RBI single to center field. After a single to left field from Zach Noonan, Cody Larson plated a run with a single to left field. Elliot Frey delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run double into the gap in left center. The final run of the inning scored on a Ty Stetson single to center field.
SEMO looked to be in business in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out, but reliever Curran McNeely got out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to left field.
The sixth inning began in the rain and the Redhawks put runners on first and third with no outs on a walk and a fielding error. Mother nature took over from that point as lightning hit the area and put the game into delay.
After the rain and lightning continued, the game was officially called after a one hour and 35 minute rain delay.
Luke Shuemaker (3-4) was credited with the win after allowing two runs on four hits and two strikeouts over four innings. Jon Dicus (3-4) took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings.
Ritzheimer finished by going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Seven Breds collected a hit in the game, while six different players scored a run.
The Breds return to action Tuesday as they travel to Belmont for a doubleheader. Both games will be seven innings and get underway at 4 p.m.
