“We went into today's match with three goals in mind,” said head coach Connie Keasling. “We wanted to play hard, play with a lot of heart and enjoy playing. We were able to accomplish all of those goals. We let the matches develop and that took some of the pressure to compete off and that will help heading into the last conference matches of the season this weekend.”
The Racers (8-12, 3-3 OVC) started the match by claiming the doubles point. Senior Alexis Webb and freshman Carla Suga were the first duo to finish, earning an 8-2 win over Maggie Boeckman and Rachel Webb at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Ashley Canty and junior Cassidy Cunitz secured the point with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Canty then earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Rachel Webb to give MSU a 2-0 lead. SIUE earned a win at No. 4 singles to cut the lead to one (2-1) before Suga finished with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Amanda Miller and freshman Taylor Vick earned the win for the Racers, with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Joanna Corkern at No. 5 singles. Alexis Webb, Canty and Cunity were also victorious in their singles matches to give MSU the 6-1 win.
The Racers will continue their last week of regular-season action Saturday, April 9 at Eastern Illinois. MSU and the Panthers will play a key OVC match, starting at 10 a.m., which will help determine the Racers seed in the 2011 OVC Championship, April 15-17 in Paducah, Ky. The final match of the season will be Sunday, April 10 in Nashville, Tenn., when MSU and Morehead State finish the match they started earlier this season in Murray, Ky.
