Murray State softball dropped its second game of the 2011 OVC Championships Friday afternoon, coming up on the short end of a 3-2 back-and-forth contest against UT Martin as the Racers season came to a close at Williams Field in Charleston, Ill.
The Racers and Skyhawks had just met a day earlier in the first game of the week for both teams, with Murray State scoring the 3-2 win that knocked UTM into the consolation bracket. UT Martin won the first game of Friday's action, picking up a 2-0 win over SIU Edwardsville to stay in contention.
Trailing a run in the bottom of the seventh, MSU was able to advance the winning run into scoring position as Jenna Bradley doubled into left center field and moved tying run Megan Glosser to third. The Racers were unable to take advantage of the situation, striking out and fouling out to the catcher behind home plate to bring the game to an end.
The Skyhawks drove in the first run of the game, scoring one in the top of the third. Megan Latimer scored from second with two outs on a single from Chelsea Cary to take a 1-0 lead.
MSU rebounded an inning later, scoring a pair to jump ahead 2-1. The bottom of the Racer lineup got it done as Ellyn Troup doubled with one out and Stephanie Mattocks singled, beating out the throw to first on a bunt to the pitcher to put runners at the corners. Meghan Sims and Stephanie Edwards each drew full-count walks, Sims' to load the bases and Edwards' to drive in Troup tie the game at 1-1. Leslie Bridges put the Racers ahead for the first time, flying out to deep left field to score Mattocks from third and take a 2-1 lead.
UT Martin got one run back in the fifth, scoring with two runners on base off of a fielding error with one out. Murray State starter Shelby Kosmecki rebounded to record the final two outs of the inning on a pop out to third and fly out center to keep the game tied.
The Skyhawks scored the final run of the game their final inning at the plate. With a runner on third and two outs, Kayla Wade hit a grounder deep to the hole at short stop, beating out the throw from Glosser to score their third run of the afternoon.
Kosmecki pitched a strong game against the UT Martin for the second consecutive day, allowing three runs, just one of them earned, on seven hits and a lone walk with two strikeouts.
Chelsea Jones earned her second win of the day for UTM, tossing 3.2 innings of relief as she gave up three hits and one walk.
Glosser led the Racers at the plate, getting hits in three of her four at bats.
Bradley paced MSU on the week, hitting .444 on four hits with two in three games. Glosser matched Bradley with four hits over Thursday and Friday. Lauren Buch drove in a team-high three runs in the Championships.
Shelby Kosmecki ended up tossing 14 innings, allowing five runs, three earned for a 1.50 earned run average.
The week saw the Racers earn their first win in the OVC Championships as well as the first win over UT Martin in seven attempts.
