Seniors Elliot Frey and Zach Noonan combined to drive in six runs as Murray State completed a doubleheader sweep over Tennessee Tech with an 8-7 victory in the nightcap Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Breds (19-31, 9-12 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Ty Stetson singled past the bag at third and Brandon Elliott followed by beating out a bunt base hit that hugged the first-base line. Travis Isaak advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, andNoonan delivered a two-out two-run single to center field.
MSU extended its lead in the second as Wes Warren reached on a throwing error and scored on Frey's two-run blast to left field. Stetson continued the rally with a single through the left side, ahead of Elliott being hit by a pitch and Isaak singling through the left side. With two outs, Noonan delivered again with an RBI single to left field.
The Golden Eagles (23-27, 11-12 OVC) got two runs back in the third as Austin Wulf delivered an RBI single through the right side and Casanova Donaldson hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Breds got a run back in the fourth as Elliott reached on a throwing error and went to third on a Jacob Rhodes single down the right-field line. Noonan drove in his fourth run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.
MSU rallied again in the fifth with Cody Larson drawing a leadoff walk, and being followed by hits from Frey and Stetson to load the bases with one out. Elliott hit a line drive that went off the glove of the shortstop for an RBI single, before Isaak scored another run with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Golden Eagles did not go quietly into the night as they put together furious rally and nearly tied the game in the seventh. The rally started with Donaldson striking out, but reaching on the wild pitch. He later scored on a Zach Stephens double to left field. Evan Frazier followed with a run-scoring double of his own. Austin Rivers plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Frankie Beech plated a run with a single through the left side. With runners on the corners and two outs, Austin Wulf hit a smash to first that was knocked down by Larson, who calmly flipped to the pitcher covering to record the out and end the game on a bang-bang play.
Cameron Finch (1-3) picked up the win after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and four strikeouts over four innings. Tyler Saltsman (1) earned the save after retiring the only hitter he faced. Matthew Shepherd (3-6) took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits over two innings.
Frey led the offense by 3-for-4 with two RBIs, falling just a triple shy of the cycle. Noonan finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Stetson added three hits and scored two runs, while Elliott had two hits and scored two runs.
The teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. A victory by the Breds, coupled with a loss by Eastern Illinois, will clinch a spot in next week's OVC Tournament.
