BOX SCORE
Eastern Kentucky scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a two-run deficit into a 9-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field.
Trailing by two runs heading to the sixth, EKU got three-straight hits and a fielder's choice to tie the game. The rally picked up with two outs as A.J. Jamison and Alex Hughes delivered two-run singles.
The Colonels (18-29, 9-11 OVC) broke through in the third inning as Jamison singled up the middle with two outs and scored on Jacob Daniel's double into the corner in right field.
The Breds (16-28, 6-9 OVC) were able to get the run back in the fourth, as a throwing error helped to tie the game. With a runner on first and one out, Paul Ritzheimer singled to left center to put runners on the corners. A bunt back to the pitcher cut down a runner at plate, before Cody Larson hit a chopper to third that was thrown away, allowing a run to score from second. A second runner tried to score from first on the play, but was thrown out.
A costly Colonel error in the fifth set the stage for a three-run inning for the Breds. Brandon Elliott was hit by a pitch with two outs and stole second. Travis Isaak followed with a chopper to short that was thrown low to first and got far enough away to allow Elliott to score. Jacob Rhodes singled off the pitch and a wild pitch moved Isaak to third. Zach Noonan walked on four pitches, and ball four was dropped by the catcher to allow Isaak to score. Ritzheimer drove in the third run with a bloop single to center field.
EKU got a run back in the bottom of the inning as a single and a walk were followed by a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one out. Jamison drove in a run with a groundout to third. Daniel looked to drive in another run with a shot down the third-base line, but Ritzheimer had other ideas as he made a diving stop and threw a strike to first to end the inning.
Jake Donze (6-4) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits and five walks over 5.2 innings. Austin Rexroat (1-0) earned the victory in relief, retiring the only batter he faced.
Rhodes and Ritzheimer each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
