Breds Fall in Finale Against Colonels

Murray State committed four errors in the first four innings and they were never able to overcome the early deficit as they dropped the series finale, 5-1, to Eastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field.
The Colonels (19-29, 10-11 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as a pair of base hits put runners on the corners for Bryan Soloman to deliver a sacrifice fly to left field.
EKU added to its lead in the fourth as the Breds committed three throwing errors before the first out was recorded. A pair of walks, coupled with a wild pitch and an error put runners on second and third with nobody out. Matt Phipps scored a run with a single to left center, and when the throw from the outfield was thrown away, a second run came around to score. The third run crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Austin Grisham.
The Breds (16-29, 6-10 OVC) got on the board in the sixth as Ty Stetson was hit by a pitch and went to second on a balk. After a Travis Isaak single to right field put runners on the corners, a wild pitch allowed Stetson to scamper home.
The Colonels got the run back in the home-half of the inning on a Grisham solo home run to right field.
Luke Shuemaker (3-5) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and three walks over three innings. Greg Terry (3-0) earned the victory after allowing one run on four hits over 5.2 innings. Matt Fyffe (1) earned the save after allowing just one hit and striking out five over the final 3.1 innings.
Tyler Saltsman held down the Colonels over the back half of the game as he allowed just one run on four hits and two strikeouts over four innings.
The Breds will take the week off for final exams before returning to action May 15-16 at Morehead State. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. both days.
