Four members of the 2011 Murray State football team were honored by the Consensus Draft Services as they were selected to the preseason All-America teams. Punt returner Dontrell Johnson was a second-team selection, while quarterback Casey Brockman, running back Mike Harris and wide receiver Arthur Brackett received honorable mention recognition.
Johnson (Moultrie, Ga.), who was named one of the Top 10 special teams players in the FCS, was honored after leading the nation in 2010 with a 21.88 yard per return average. He was a Second-Team All-America selection from The Sports Network and Phil Steele Magazine, as well as being named the College Football Performance Awards National Punt Returner of the Year.
Johnson set a MSU record by returning two punts for touchdown in the same season. In just his second career game returning punts, he took a first-quarter punt 91 yards for a touchdown in a conference victory over UT Martin. Johnson finished the day by averaging 49.3 yards on three returns. He followed that up by returning a punt 70 yards for a touchdown against Jacksonville State.
Brockman (Murray, Ky.) was named one of the Top 10 quarterbacks in the FCS this season, despite starting just six games a season ago. He still managed to pass for 2,442 yards and 15 touchdowns, while only tossing six interceptions. He also rushed for 292 yards and seven scores. In his first start of 2010, Brockman went 32-for-41 for a school record 570 yards and seven touchdowns. He followed it up by setting a school record with 41 completions on 58 attempts in a victory over Eastern Illinois. Brockman closed out the season by throwing for 300 yards and rushing for 112 in a victory over Tennessee State to become just the second quarterback in school history to rush for 100 yards and pass for 300 yards in the same game.
Harris (Tulsa, Okla.) missed all or parts of four games last season, but still managed to nearly rush for 1,000 yards. He was tabbed one of the Top 10 running backs after rushing for 904 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first season as a Racer. He rushed for over 100 yards in four games, and become just the third Racer in school history to rush for over 200 yards twice in the same season. Harris recorded his first 200-yard game against Missouri State when he rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns. He followed that up with a 159-yard, three touchdown performance in a victory over Eastern Illinois. His best performance came against Tennessee Tech when he rush for 242 yards and a touchdown, including a 94-yard run late in the first half.
Brackett (Madison, Ala.) set a school-freshman record by catching 62 passes for 617 yards and three touchdowns. He ranked second in the conference in receptions, behind only All-American Marcus Harris. Brackett caught a touchdown pass in each of his first two collegiate games. Against JSU, Brackett caught 13 passes for 96 yards. The 13 receptions are just two shy of the FCS freshman record.
