With temperatures only reaching the mid-80s, the Murray State football team took to the field Thursday afternoon on the turf at Stewart Stadium. The full-pad workout marked the home stretch of camp as the Racers will practice twice on Friday, before breaking camp with a scrimmage Saturday morning.
“First of all, I didn't think it was that hot out here today, we need a little more heat than we were getting,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “I thought we had a good teaching period at the beginning of practice. I was a little disappointed and thought our tempo should have been better, but then I remembered I told our coaches to slow it down at the beginning of practice and teach a little more. I thought we had a good scrimmage with good enthusiasm. I think we are starting to get in shape.”
The Racers continued to go through individual and team drills to start to put a depth chart together. Following the scrimmage on Saturday, the Racers will form a scout team and begin to prepare for the season opener against Louisville on Sept. 1.
Mike Harris got the scrimmage off to fast start for the offense as he broke through on a 30-yard run on the first play. Blake Salter broke through for a sack, but Casey Brockman kept the drive alive with a nice 50-yard connection to Patrick Robertson.
The defense was able to put an end to the second drive as Jesurun Kelly recovered a fumble. The biggest hit of the day came from safety Julian Whitead against Robertson. Despite the hit, Robertson hung on for a big gain. The offense finally got on the board as Hannibal Beauford caught a 10-yard pass from Brockman.
The Racers will hold two practices on Friday. The first practice will be in full pads at 8:15 a.m., with the second practice being in just shoulder pads at 6 p.m.
