The Murray State football team broke camp Saturday morning as the conducted their final scrimmage of the preseason on the turf inside Stewart Stadium. The team will spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying food and swimming, before getting an off day on Sunday.
“I think we are pretty close to where we need to be. The big thing for us is we are just very inconsistent,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “I am looking for us to start coming out and being more consistent in our work, instead of up and down.”
The Racer offense got off to a quick start as running back Mike Harris broke free for a 67-yard run on the third play. After a few short completions, Ja-Vonta Trotter went around left end for a six-yard touchdown.
Harris did not see much action in the scrimmage, but made the most of his of his three touches. On the second series, Harris broke through the line for a 55-yard run. He would finish the day with three carries for 122 yards.
“Mike is a great player and he has improved a lot since last season,” said Hatcher. “He has been hampered by some nagging injuries, but he came out and had some big runs early, and had some great blocking. He is definitely the guy that has to play well in order for us to achieve our goals.”
After the defense made some big plays to stop a few drives, the offense found its way into the endzone for the second time. Trotter helped to spark the drive with a 14-yard reception, before capping the drive with a 37-yard touchdown catch.
Trotter completed the hat trick by catching a 20-yard touchdown from Casey Brockman during the red-zone portion of the scrimmage.
Brockman helped the offense find the endzone two more times as he hit Hannibal Beauford for a 20-yard score, and Patrick Robertson for a four-yard touchdown.
The defense was also able to make some big plays as linebacker Sam Small recorded two the team's six sacks, and Jamal Crook recovered a fumble.
The Racers will continue to practice in preparation for the season opener on Sept. 1 at Louisville. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
