The preseason accolades continue to roll in for senior Dontrell Johnson as he was named a Second-Team All-America punt returner by Phil Steele Magazine and the College Sporting News. Earlier this summer, Johnson was named a First-Team All-America by The Sports Network. He was also named a preseason selection by the Consensus Draft Services and Athlon Magazine.
Johnson (Moultrie, Ga.), who was also named one of the Top 10 special teams players in the FCS, was honored after leading the nation in 2010 with a 21.88 yard per return average. He was a Second-Team All-America selection from The Sports Network and Phil Steele Magazine, as well as being named the College Football Performance Awards National Punt Returner of the Year.
Johnson set a MSU record by returning two punts for touchdown in the same season. In just his second career game returning punts, he took a first-quarter punt 91 yards for a touchdown in a conference victory over UT Martin. Johnson finished the day by averaging 49.3 yards on three returns. He followed that up by returning a punt 70 yards for a touchdown against Jacksonville State.
The Racers open the 2011 season on Sept. 1 against Louisville. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU.
