Racers Win 2-1 OT Thriller At Arkansas State

Freshman Julie Mooney led the Racers with a goal and an assist Sunday afternoon, scoring the game-winner in the 93rd minute as Murray State soccer picked up a 2-1 overtime win against Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark.
Mooney assisted on the first goal of the game, crossing a pass from the left side of the Murray State (2-5-1) attacking zone to Sophie Hargreaves. Hargreaves, who led the Racers in scoring last season with six goals, put in the pass at the near post for her first of the season at 12:40.
Arkansas State (2-3-1) would come back to tie the match in the second half, scoring in the 73rd minute as Tory Pitts launched a shot into the upper right corner of the net to even things a 1-1.
The game-winner came almost three minutes into the first overtime period. The goal, Mooney's second of the season, was shot from the right side of the 18-yard box towards the left post. Jenelle Cunningham assisted on the goal, her team-leading third of the season.
The teams were nearly equal on the shot tally, with Arkansas State holding a slight 16-14 total shot advantage.
Lauren Kelly earned the win in her first appearance for the Racers, making a pair of saves in just over 20 minutes of action.
The Racers open Ohio Valley Conference action after a week off, hosting UT Martin Sept. 23 at 3 p.m.

"This was a great win for us going into OVC play," head coach Beth Acreman said. "The team responded with a good away win and I know this has helped our confidence. We will be working extremely hard over the next two weeks in preparation for conference play. I am proud of the team's ability to fight and get this result."
