2011-12 Schedule
“The Racers have the best fans in college basketball and I'm excited for them to see the games that we'll have this season on our home floor,” Prohm added. “Plus when you have non-league road games at WKU, UAB and Memphis, those are games that are easy for our fans to travel and watch.”
MSU travels to Baltimore, Md., (Nov. 14) for a game against Morgan State, before coming home to face Tennessee Temple (Nov. 17).
Starting with a road game at Alabama-Birmingham (Nov. 20), the Racers will be away from home for more than a week. After the UAB game, MSU travels to Anchorage Thanksgiving week for their first appearance in the Great Alaska Shootout. MSU opens the tournament against host Alaska-Anchorage (Nov. 23) then faces the winner of San Francisco/Dartmouth (Nov. 25). The Racers play their final game in Alaska (Nov. 26).
December begins with MSU's 149th meeting with Western Kentucky (Dec. 1) in Bowling Green, Ky. Since the series was renewed in 1997, MSU is 7-5 against the Hilltoppers and will be looking for their first win at Diddle Arena since 2003.
The WKU game starts an impressive string of five games against top non-league opponents. MSU hosts Dayton (Dec. 4) in the Flyers first appearance at MSU since 1955. The Racers won their last meeting with Dayton in 1997. The Flyers won 22 games a year ago and won the National Invitation Tournament championship in 2010. The Racers travel to the Fed-Ex Forum (Dec. 11) for their first meeting with Memphis since 2002. The Tigers won 25 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. Lipscomb, who won 17 games last season and finished fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference, comes to MSU (Dec. 15). Arkansas State makes a visit to the CFSB Center (Dec. 17) as the Racers look to get a win over ASU for the first time since their last visit to MSU in 2007.
MSU begins its quest for their third-straight OVC regular-season title (Dec. 21) and their 23rd overall, when they host UT Martin. MSU ends 2011 with a road contest at Eastern Illinois (Dec. 30).
The Racers play seven games in January, highlighted by their first of two meetings with Austin
Peay. The first is a road game (Jan. 7) with the Governors returning to the CFSB Center (Feb. 11). The Racers host other big games in February including, Southeast Missouri (Feb. 2), Tennessee State (Feb. 9) and the ESPNU BracketBusters game (Feb. 18).
Murray State will go for their 15th OVC Tournament title when the event is staged at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., Feb. 29 through March 3. The top two teams in the regular-season standings earn byes into the semifinals and the third and fourth seeds earn a bye to the quarterfinals.
The 2011-12 season marks a change in the way the OVC conducts regular-season play, with the addition of SIU Edwardsville as a league member. Teams will not play home-and-home series against all schools. Because of the unbalanced number of teams (11), each school will play six teams twice, but play four teams only once. The Racers' single games are against Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State and SIUE.
“We obviously have a challenging schedule,” Prohm said. “We're excited about the opportunities that we'll have to compete against some high-profile teams. This schedule will enable us to test ourselves to see where we're at heading into OVC play.”
The 2011-12 season finds the Racers aiming for their 24th consecutive winning season. MSU's streak is tied with Connecticut for fourth in the nation and behind only Syracuse (41), Kansas (28) and Arizona (27).
Murray State men's basketball announced its 2011-12 schedule featuring 15 home games at the CFSB Center, which includes meetings against Dayton, Lipscomb and Arkansas State as well as a full slate of Ohio Valley Conference games as the Racers will be trying for their third-straight league title.
One of the toughest non-conference schedules the Racers have faced includes an appearance in the Great Alaska Shootout and games against two top-40 RPI teams from last season, Memphis and UAB. MSU also faces Dayton, WKU, Lipscomb and Arkansas State.
“We wanted to put together a schedule that will help us prepare in November and December to win a conference championship in March,” Murray State Head Coach Prohm said. “When you look at the teams we're facing, there isn't a team on there that won't be a challenge. All of them are programs competing for championships in their respective leagues.”
The season begins with an exhibition game at the CFSB Center against Bethel (Nov. 8), before the Racers look for their 22nd-straight win in a home opener (Nov. 11) when they host Harris-Stowe.
The Racers, who enjoy one of the best home-court advantages in all of college basketball, look to take advantage of their games at the CFSB Center. MSU is ranked 12th in the nation in NCAA D-I with a 28-2 (.933) mark over the last two seasons and they're 40-4 (.909) over the last three seasons.
