The Murray State Racers won a hard-fought 66-55 win for their 17th straight to start the season Thursday over Jacksonville State at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The win for the Racers (17-0, 5-0) sets a new school record for the best start to the season, besting the mark of 16-0 by the team from 1935-36. MSU's 17-0 matches the school record overall win streak that was set in the 2009-10 season.
Donte Poole led all scorers with 21 points on a night when made baskets were at a premium. He was 12-of-14 at the free throw line and 4-of-7 from the field. Both teams struggled from downtown, with MSU 2-of-11 from three and the Gamecocks completing two of their nine 3-point attempts for the game.
The 15th ranked Racers had to battle to keep their perfect season intact. After leading 25-23 at the half, the Gamecocks tied the game 28-28 with 17:29 remaining.
A three-point play by Latreze Mushatt gave MSU a 45-37 lead at the 10:42 mark.
MSU finally created some space between themselves and JSU at the 4:08 mark when Zay Jackson tipped a pass that was stolen by Donte Poole, who fed Jackson for a three-pointer and a 61-48 MSU lead.
Ed Daniel was a rebound short of a double-double, finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds. Jackson added 10 points while grabbing a season-best six boards. Isaiah Canaan also ended the night in double digits with 10 points.
Brian Wilson led Jacksonville State (6-13, 1-5) with 18 points and four rebounds.
The Racers continue OVC action this weekend at home, hosting Tennessee Tech at the CFSB Center Saturday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the game televised on ESPNU.
