Murray State junior Walter Powell became the first Racer to return a punt since 2010, and for his efforts, he was honored as the College Football Performance Awards National Punt Returner of the Week. Quarterback Casey Brockman was also selected to the CFPA Honor Roll.
Powell (St. Louis, Mo.) had his best day of the season as he used a big first half performance to propel the Racers to a 70-35 victory over Tennessee Tech. He finished the game with 10 catches for 162 yards and a touchown, while adding 84 yards on three punt returns and a 34-yard kickoff return.
With the Racers up 21-7 in the first quarter, Powell fielded a punt at his own 30-yard line and went straight up the middle. He went to the right sideline and kept his balance from a would-be tackler and raced into the endzone. It was the first punt return for a touchdown since Dontrell Johnson went 70 yards against Jacksonville State in 2010.
Powell helped the Racers jump out the big lead by catching two passes for 31 yards on the opening drive, the second being a 14-yard touchdown grab. Early in the second quarter, he aided a five-play, 94-yard drive by catching passes on three-straight plays for 88 yards.
Brockman (Murray, Ky) was honored after going 32-for-38 for 381 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown. It was the fourth-straight 300-yard passing game for the senior, and the 50th touchdown pass of his career. He tied Michael Proctor for the school record for passing attempts in a career, and stands just two touchdown passes shy of Proctor's record of 52.
